How it Works (US Navy Method)

The US Navy Body Fat formula is a widely used method to estimate body fat percentage using simple tape measurements. While not as precise as a DEXA scan, it provides a reliable estimate for most people.

The Formulas

  • Men: 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 * log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 * log10(height)) - 450
  • Women: 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 * log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 * log10(height)) - 450

How to Measure Correctly

  • Height: Measure without shoes, standing straight.
  • Neck: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Waist: For men, measure at the navel. For women, measure at the narrowest point (natural waistline).
  • Hips (Women only): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.
