Ideal Weight Methodology

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of what a person should weigh based on their height and gender. It's important to note that IBW is a general guideline and doesn't account for muscle mass or body composition.

The Formulas Used

  • Miller (1983): Often considered one of the most accurate for modern populations.
  • Devine (1974): Originally developed for medicinal dosage calculations.
  • Robinson (1983): A modification of the Devine formula.
  • Hamwi (1964): One of the oldest and simplest formulas still in use.

Our calculator provides an average of all four formulas to give you a balanced estimate.
